Visitors stayed an average of 4.7 nights per check-in in Cyprus and 1.5 in Iceland in 2025, the longest and shortest of the 33 European countries with complete Eurostat figures. This counts each check-in at tourist accommodation, so a whole trip is longer than the figure.

How long do visitors stay, country by country?
Eurostat counts every night guests spend at tourist accommodation and every time a guest checks in. Dividing one by the other gives the average stay per check-in. In 2025 it ran from 1.5 nights in Iceland to 4.7 in Cyprus, across the 33 countries with complete figures. Each country's own page gives the same figure with its source.

What this figure is, and what it is not
It is a measured average, not advice on how long to stay. Eurostat counts an arrival each time a guest checks in at a place to stay, so a traveller who moves between places is counted more than once, and a whole trip is longer than the figure suggests. It counts all guests at the tourist accommodation Eurostat covers (its classes I55.1 to I55.3), as our country pages' source notes say.
For when each country is busy and quiet, see off-season in Europe; to rank countries on several measures at once, see how places stack up.
Key takeaways
- Longest average stay per check-in: Cyprus, 4.7 nights; shortest: Iceland, 1.5.
- A whole trip is longer than these figures, because each new place to stay is a new check-in.
- What we would skip: reading the figure as how long you should stay.
