We compared 32 towns in 7 groups, using each country's own statistics office. Per resident, the town with the most tourist nights (hotel nights in the Dutch group) in each group was Bohinj, Monterosso al Mare, Portofino, Polignano a Mare, Positano, Obertraun and Amsterdam. The lowest were Bled, Lerici, Camogli, Monopoli, Cetara, Bad Goisern am Hallstättersee and Utrecht. Countries count nights differently, so compare towns only within a group.
How we compared them
Our regional comparison could only look at whole regions. Here we go down to single municipalities, using figures from the statistics office of each country: Slovenia, Italy, Austria and the Netherlands. For each town we took the number of nights tourists spent there in a year and divided it by the number of people living there, so small and large towns can be compared.1,3,6,8
Each country counts nights in its own way, and the latest year is 2025 everywhere except Austria (2024), so compare towns only within the same group, not across groups.

Bled or Bohinj?
In 2025, Bohinj had the most tourist nights per resident in this group, 166.2, and Bled the fewest, 149.2.1,2 In total, Bled had the most tourist nights: 1,216,324.1

The Cinque Terre or other towns in the province of La Spezia?
The Cinque Terre marine protected area takes in the municipalities of Riomaggiore, Vernazza and Monterosso, and a small part of Levanto.5 Here the three are set against three other municipalities in the province of La Spezia: Levanto, Portovenere and Lerici.3
In 2025, Monterosso al Mare (206.3), Riomaggiore (178.0) and Vernazza (144.6) each had more tourist nights per resident than any of Levanto, Portovenere and Lerici, where the highest was 83.1.3,4 From 2025, Istat's figures include privately rented places to stay that are not run as a business, so Istat says they cannot be compared with earlier years.3

In 2024, Obertraun had the most tourist nights per resident in this group, 376.1, and Bad Goisern am Hallstättersee the fewest, 34.9.6,7 In total, Sankt Wolfgang im Salzkammergut had the most tourist nights: 406,095.6 These are 2024 figures, the latest year in Statistik Austria's municipality profiles.6

Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague or Utrecht?
In 2025, Amsterdam had the most hotel nights per resident in this group, 23.8, and Utrecht the fewest, 2.9.8,9 In total, Amsterdam had the most hotel nights: 22,200,000.8 In the Statistics Netherlands table we used, town figures cover hotels only, in thousands of nights, for six municipalities, so other places to stay are not counted here.8

What these figures cannot tell you
- Nights, not day visitors. People who visit for the day and sleep somewhere else are not counted. A town that many people visit for the day can have fewer nights than its neighbours.
- Whole municipalities. A municipality can include several villages and the countryside around them, not only the place its name is best known for.
- One year. These are yearly totals. The busiest month can be far busier than the average.
- We have not been to these places and make no judgement about which is better.
