National park of Portugal: Peneda-Gerês

TL;DR

Portugal's national network of protected areas, published by the nature conservation institute ICNF, has 56 protected areas, and one of them is classified as a national park: Peneda-Gerês. The others are natural parks, nature reserves, protected landscapes and other classes.1

Which national park does ICNF list?

The network's data has 56 areas, each with a classification; only Peneda-Gerês is classified as Parque Nacional. The data gives the act that classified it and a later act.1

We give the decree-law as the data writes it rather than work out a year from its number. ICNF's own metadata page lists it among the decree-laws in force for each protected area.1

What this page cannot tell you

  • Other classes are not here. Natural parks and other protected areas are separate classifications, so they are not on this page.

Key takeaways

  • ICNF's data has one national park, Peneda-Gerês.
  • The other protected areas in the network have other classifications.
  • The decree is shown exactly as the data gives it.
  • What we would skip: reading the list as a ranking or a travel guide. It records an official designation; it says nothing about opening, access or conditions, so check each park's own information before you go.
