National parks of Finland: all 41

TL;DR

Finland's protected areas data, from Metsähallitus and the Finnish Environment Institute, lists 41 national parks, the same number Metsähallitus gives on its website. For each we give the year of the founding act in the data, which can be an act that covered several parks at once.13

Which national parks does the data list?

The state-owned protected areas layer has 41 national parks in force. A further record for part of Selkämeren kansallispuisto held by the City of Rauma is part of a park already listed, so it is not counted again.1 Metsähallitus says it maintains hiking services in all 41 national parks.3

* The data gives no date for the founding act of Koloveden kansallispuisto. The ELY centre area is an administrative area named in the data, not a tourist region.

What does the year mean?

It is the year of the decision date in the data, which goes with the act named alongside it, for example the 1981 act that formed several state areas into national parks. For a park that was merged or refounded under a later act, it is the year of the current act, which can be later than the area's first protection.1

What this page cannot tell you

  • Names in Finnish. We give the names as the data writes them; some have no Swedish name in the data, so we use Finnish only.
  • The year is an act's date. See above.

Key takeaways

  • The data lists 41 national parks, and Metsähallitus gives the same number.
  • The year is the year of the founding act in the data.
  • One park, Koloveden, has no founding act date in the data.
  • What we would skip: reading the list as a ranking or a travel guide. It records an official designation; it says nothing about opening, access or conditions, so check each park's own information before you go.
