National parks of Austria: all 6

TL;DR

Austria's national parks dataset, published by the Umweltbundesamt on data.gv.at, maps 6 national parks: Donau-Auen, Neusiedler See, Hohe Tauern, Thayatal, Kalkalpen and Gesäuse. Its boundaries are as of 1.1.2012, and it also has a record for Nockberge, which we leave out.1

Which national parks are in the dataset?

The dataset has one record per park and federal state, all in the national park category. Hohe Tauern spans three states and Donau-Auen two, so we list each park once with all its state codes.1

The data spells some parks differently in different states (for example Donau-Auen and Nationalpark Donauauen); we use one spelling from the data for each.

Why is Nockberge not listed?

The dataset, with boundaries as of 1.1.2012, also has a record for Nockberge in the national park category, with IUCN category V where the others have II.1 The federal ministry's page on national parks names six, without Nockberge, so we leave it out.2 We used that page only to check the count.

Can this list be reused?

The dataset's distribution on data.gv.at is under CC BY 4.0, and the Umweltbundesamt says it publishes its environmental data under that licence.1 The terms file in the download asks for the credit Datenquelle: Umweltbundesamt GmbH - data.umweltbundesamt.at and names the regional governments that supplied the data.1

What this page cannot tell you

  • Old boundaries. The data is as of 1.1.2012; we use the names only.
  • No dates here. The data has no date field.

Key takeaways

  • The dataset maps 6 national parks after Nockberge is left out.
  • Hohe Tauern spans three federal states.
  • Credit: Umweltbundesamt GmbH and the regional governments.
  • What we would skip: reading the list as a ranking or a travel guide. It records an official designation; it says nothing about opening, access or conditions, so check each park's own information before you go.
