Japan Heritage (日本遺産): every story, with prefectures and year

TL;DR

Japan Heritage is a recognition from the Agency for Cultural Affairs for stories that tell Japan's culture and traditions through a region's history. Its portal lists 104 stories, recognised from 2015 to 2020 and one in 2025. Many span several prefectures. Story names are in Japanese, as the agency's portal gives them.21389

What is Japan Heritage?

The Agency for Cultural Affairs (文化庁) recognises a story, not a single building: a theme from a region's history and character that tells something about Japan's culture and traditions. Each story brings together a group of cultural properties, and the aim is to use them to revitalise the region.2

A story can sit within one municipality or run across several. Each must include at least one cultural property designated or selected by the national government.2

The agency also reviews stories after recognition. Its latest results, published on 1 September 2026, covered the stories recognised in 2020.10

How many stories were recognised each year?

The year is the year the agency announced the recognition. The 2025 story, #105, was announced on 4 February 2025 in the results for the 2024 financial year.9

The story numbered 16, 古代日本の「西の都」　～東アジアとの交流拠点～, recognised in 2015, is not on the current portal list: the agency's results of 4 February 2025 list it as a candidate area (候補地域).9 That is why the 2015 row shows one story fewer than were recognised that year.
